Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search box is sent directly to the outside company operating that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. Barbour County Criminal History does not retain or record those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email message may be kept as needed to prepare and send a response. It remains within the organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, the servers automatically receive standard technical information about the visit:
- Page-view dates and times
- Your device's IP address
- Browser name and version
- Operating system and device category
- Visited pages and time spent on them
- A referring website, when one exists
Cookies and Analytics
Small files called cookies help measure how visitors move through the site, including popular pages and common exit points. Analytics providers combine that traffic information for review. You can block cookies through your browser, although doing so may change how some site functions behave.
What We Do With This Data
- Routing a submitted search to the appropriate partner
- Maintaining reliable and prompt site operation
- Diagnosing and repairing technical problems
- Assessing which pages help visitors and which need improvement
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Barbour County Criminal History does not keep, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to records held by the Barbour County Sheriff's Department, the courts, the West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, and the West Virginia Sex Offender Registry. It is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor data is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Independent companies operate the search tools. Information placed in a partner tool is subject to that company's privacy policy, retention rules, and sharing choices, which are outside our control. Review those terms before sending a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to courts, law-enforcement agencies, state offices, legal aid resources, or outside search providers. Once you follow an external link, the destination's privacy rules govern the visit. Check them before providing personal information.
Some advertising companies may track activity across websites for interest-based ads. That processing occurs through the advertiser's systems.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:
- Analytics providers measuring traffic and performance
- Search companies processing a query you submit
- Advertising networks serving ads on the pages
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable standard safeguards are used for collected information. No internet-connected system can be guaranteed secure, however, and a breach cannot be ruled out.
Users Under 18
The site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If data from a minor is identified, a request may be made for its prompt deletion.
Your Data Rights
Rights vary by location and the type of record. West Virginia public agency records are governed by the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act, W. Va. Code Chapter 29B, while CIB dissemination is addressed in W. Va. Code §15-2-24(d). Subject to applicable privacy law, you may:
- Request deletion of your personal data
- Ask what personal information is held about you
- Seek correction of inaccurate information
- Decline certain forms of processing when the law permits
